Winter Programs 2026

Want to learn the basics of maintenance? Sew your own bike bag? Just get your bike fixed up?

We have events for you!

Workshops are made possible through a new winter partnership with FabVille, a program of Artisans Asylum based in Somerville High School. We’ll have a monthly “ABCs of Bike Maintenance” class covering the basics that you need to know to keep your bike running safely. We’ll also have a specialty workshop every month, where you can learn from experts about specific bike skills. Each event has a 10-participant cap, so RSVPs are required. You can RSVP here for any workshop. We’ll also send out information for each workshop individually as the winter goes on.

Workshop Schedule:

Winter Rider Safety: Wednesday, January 21, 5:30-7:30pm

ABCs of Bike Maintenance: Wednesday, January 28, 5:30-7:30pm

Fix a Flat, True a Wheel: Monday, February 9, 5:30-7:30pm

ABCs of Bike Maintenance: Monday, February 23, 5:30-7:30pm

Sewing Workshop: Make Your Own Bike Bag!: Monday, March 9, 5:30-7:30pm

ABCs of Bike Maintenance: Monday, March 30, 5:30-7:30pm

Winter Open Shop is just like our classic Open Shop, but we sure won’t be outdoors! Instead, we’ll be set up at Artisans Asylum at 96 Holton St, Boston, MA 02135. Bring your bike and learn how to fix specific problems or take care of it in the winter with guidance from Commonwheels staff and volunteers. Open Shop does not require RSVP.

Winter Open Shop Schedule:

Sunday, January 25, 6-10pm

Monday, February 16, 4-8pm

Sunday, March 15, 6-10pm

As always, you can also view our public events calendar here or add it to your personal calendar from this link. You can also stay up to date at our Instagram and Facebook. Once spring arrives and the outdoors is bearable, we’ll be back to our weekly outdoor Open Shop. Feel free to reach out to info@commonwheels.org with questions or feedback. Hope to see you this winter!

Summer Programs

Open Shop

Our flagship program is Open Shop, a free, DIY, bike-maintenance skillshare. We provide the tools and guidance needed to keep your bike working so you can keep riding. Our goal isn't to fix your bike and send you on your way, it's to help you fix your own bike. Open Shop is also a great chance to hang out with your fellow Boston cyclists, trade stories of biking adventures, and share your own knowledge.

If you’re participating in Open Shop, please make sure to fill out the waiver! You can scan (or click) the QR code to the right.

Locations & Times

Open Shop has concluded for the 2025 season. See you next year!

Rides

Our group rides are all about discovering what the city has to offer while making connections with your fellow cyclists. Our rides have taken us all over, from the famous Walden Pond to the always popular Castle Island; we've watched divers jump off buildings into Boston Harbor and learned the fine art of sheep-shearing at a local farm. As a part of our Musical Mystery Ride series, we’ve taken in secret concerts of local musicians in the dead of night. What we're saying is: we know how to have an absurd amount of fun.

CommonWheels rides are always guided, and are paced for recreation—so if you don't ride fast, no worries! Check our Calendar for upcoming rides, follow us on Facebook and Instagram for ride-related announcements, and let us know if you'd like to design and lead a ride yourself.

Allston Rat Race

Our annual community event is a 10-hour ride: part festival, part competition, all fun! Modeled after Milwaukee’s Riverwest 24, we’ve been organizing the Allston Rat Race since 2018 to celebrate everything that makes CommonWheels and Allston great.

Billed as “The Race That’s Not a Race,” the Allston Rat Race is a combination alley cat, and casual community ride. You can ride as much or as little as you want. Complete laps, or just visit the bonus stops. Either way, make sure to hit up our after party afterwards!
